Newham PRUs is a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) located in the London Borough of Newham.
We have around 60 students on site, aged 11-16, and cater for a wide variety of need. We also have a specialist Key Stage 4 provision, the Beaumont Centre, which is based on the main school site.
Some of our students have been permanently excluded from school or are at risk of permanent exclusion. These students usually spend 2 terms at the PRU before they return to newly allocated mainstream schools. Students who arrive during the latter stages of Key Stage 4 sometimes choose to stay on and take their GCSEs with us.
We also have a number of students who have been referred to us by a medical professional. For a variety of reasons they may have found it difficult to cope in mainstream school but find they are able to access their education in our small, on-site groups.
Our Outreach Team also deliver home tuition to students who are unable to attend school for medical or mental health reasons. In addition, we have teachers based at the Coborn Unit at Newham University Hospital.
All of our students have a common need for a sensitive and nurturing approach to their education so that they can begin to address some of the issues that have created difficulties for them in mainstream school. Newham PRUs is a fresh start for all students. We aim to provide an environment where all views are valued and where students feel enabled to make positive choices regarding their learning and their interactions with others.
The PRU runs like a school, with some differences. We operate on a first name basis and place a high emphasis on pastoral support. We also run a wide range of enrichment activities, designed to promote to our students a greater understanding of the wider world and their place within it. Our aim is for all of our students to lead successful, independent lives, both in the workplace and in their relationships with others.
